Oregon’s duck listed among nation’s coolest mascots
Oregon’s duck mascot has something in common with the UO football team in 2010:
Both are ranked among the nation’s top 12.
The same college football writers and broadcasters who voted the Ducks the No. 11 team in the country in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll, voted “the duck” No. 12 on the AP’s list of college football’s “12 coolest mascots.”
“A duck might be the weakest mascot a football team can have, but I still love it,” said Lubbock Avalanche-Journal writer Adam Zuvanich. “And seriously, who doesn’t like Donald Duck?”
A duck might indeed be considered weak in the rugged world of college football, but let’s not forget what happened when the University of Oregon tried to toughen up its mascot.
That’s right, RoboDuck.
Thankfully, the university got rid of the alternative mascot relatively quickly (it’s never good when your mascot is booed by your own fans), and returned to the iconic and playful Donald.
These days, many students and fans are incorrectly calling the mascot “Puddles,” but he’s still Donald to most. According to GoDucks.com, “Puddles” was the name of a live duck that lived on the Millrace in the 1920s and was brought to football and basketball games by fraternity members who lived nearby.
Donald. Puddles. The Duck.
No matter what you call him, one thing’s for sure about Oregon’s mascot:
He’s one of the coolest in the nation.
